India’s slide to 161, from 150 in 2022, out of 180 countries proves this point. This phenomenon is quite disconcerting for a free press. Most of the TV channels are owned and/or taken over (NDTV) by business houses owning allegiance to the ruling dispensation. However, even the Catholic Church which takes upon itself as a torchbearer of justice is equally guilty of suffocating press freedom. Today’s church media is highly regimented (full of “Good News” of prayer conventions, festival reports, inaugural functions, retreats & recollections) and is basically one-way traffic – sermons from the top. Most church-run journals do not even have a provision for feedback / letters to the editor. They have a fixed set of writers and do not publish articles, especially divergent views, from a cross-section of the Laity. In some cases even the Editorial Board is from the same cultural background (South, North, etc).
